At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
